YUE LIN

I am Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography & Geographic Information Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where I direct the Geospatial Computing & Society Lab. I am also a Faculty Affiliate at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications and the Center for Social & Behavioral Science. I also serve on the Board of Directors of the Cartography and Geographic Information Society.
My research explores the intersection of data, computation, and human values. I am interested in how emerging geospatial technologies can be designed and used in ways that are ethical, socially responsible, and beneficial to humanity. More broadly, my interests span spatial data science, location privacy, and critical geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI).
I’m currently investigating the social and ethical implications of GeoAI, including issues of socio-spatial biases, model collapse, and loss of diversity. I’m also committed to helping students to engage critically with these technologies by integrating AI literacy and ethical reasoning into their geospatial education.
